I think I'll ditch my ideas for my memoir, title the book "What He Said", and publish this. In responding to a point in time, you've managed to weave together all the important points since NCLB. Norton Grubb's The Money Myth: School, Resources, Outcome, and Equity singled out teacher quality as the single most important factor in student success. But competence gets swallowed up by side issues every single time. Thanks for such a compelling piece.

Did you happen to see this? I was disappointed that so few of the things that Ed people on Substack are actually mentioned. Nothing mentioned about higher behavior standards that reduces disruptions, higher academic standards and reduced grade inflation, knowledge rich curriculum, reduced bureaucratic box checking that doesn’t improve what happens in the classroom every day. I think you’ve put your finger on it - most school admin and way too many teachers don’t have a good mental model of how students learn, what a good lesson looks like, or what good formative assessment looks like. https://www.nytimes.com/2026/09/28/upshot/ideas-fixing-schools-ranked.html
